For the fans

The reviews online are mixed. Some find the new Mortal Kombat entertaining. Others mainly rate it as “for the fans,” and the latter could well be the case since the film mainly shows a lot of fights, fatalities, and other typical Mortal Kombat exploits. Personally, I would say this one is for the fans. Or at least for the ones who just want to see some bloody fighting.

In terms of story, this was pretty much disappointing. Everything was moving fast, and I can’t blame them for that. However, this really felt like a speed-up to get the movie-going. On a positive note, you get some awesome fights along the way.

When announcing the new Mortal Kombat movie, the makers promised that it would be a spectacular and gory action movie. Well, that promise has been amply fulfilled. In the opening sequence, we are already treated to spectacular fights and gory scenes. However, this was also one of the best scenes.

The biggest downsides are the storytelling and the acting. You don’t have to be a movie expert to notice some terrible acting.

Cole Young

Mortal Kombat (2021) introduced a new character, Cole Young. He’s one of the same bloodlines as Scorpion. I don’t know how fans truly feel about this new guy, but I’m fine with movies creating some new additions. With that said, Cole Young was pretty dull and uninteresting.

He stars out as an MMA fighter who actually gets his ass kicked. Now, I don’t know much about the lore of Mortal Kombat, but they have to unlock their powers in this universe. Once they got their special ability, they were more fierce fighters. This was also the case for Cole Young, however, I never truly understood his power.

Awesome fights with special effects

The special effects and CGI animations are convincing despite the fact that in some fragments, it is very clear that the characters were conjured up on the screen with the aid of the computer. That should not spoil the fun, because the viewing pleasure is there. Especially for fans of the games who will recognize many characters, scenery and artifacts.

As an action movie full of extraordinary characters and bombastic fragments, Mortal Kombat manages to entertain its fans. Mortal Kombat does serve more as an introductory film for what is to come. So don’t be disappointed if your favorite character is not featured in the film or only plays a modest role. There is a good chance that you will see them in the yet-to-be-released and already announced sequels. Well, if there’s gonna be one.

One of the biggest disappointments is that they’re referencing the tournament “Mortal Kombat,” but they actually never get to that point. The title might be “Mortal Kombat,” but in reality there is no Mortal Kombat in this film. They are just trying to prevent it from happening. Sure, if they make a sequel, we will probably get to that. However, that is uncertain and overall, this film just felt like a set-up.

Conclusion

Mortal Kombat contains many gory battles that fans do look forward to. However, this film has a lot of issues: bad script, terrible acting and no tournament named after its title, Mortal Kombat.
