Da 5 Bloods

I’ve seen a movie trailer some months before the movie came out, and I was already sold. I loved the way the trailer was made with different types of cinematography. When they’re showing flashbacks, the scenes look older. Even the screen ratio is different. That was a great touch to the movie, and somehow it makes it feels like art. And the trailer doesn’t give too much away, which is great.

Spike Lee directed this movie and also BlacKkKlansman. It’s not a director who I’m familiar with, but I have to say that I love what he directed so far. From now on, he’s on my radar! However, the movie can feel choppy from time to time, but it was still okay.

Da 5 Bloods is a group of African American vets who fought in the war in Vietnam. It’s not really about the war itself, but more about the characters themselves. And that’s what I also loved about the film.

You see them as humans. They’re like a good group of friends and you can feel the friendship, but also have their own issues due to the war. That’s what made the movie so interesting as I wanted to know more about them.

Delroy Lindo

I could talk about all the characters, but Delroy Lindo stole the show for me. He played Paul, who was dealing with PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder.) Out of all of them, he was the most interesting.

Spike Lee definitely sends us a message through his movies, and especially through Lindo. He’s in such misery that he kind of chose to be angry. Sometimes it feels like he stays in an angry mood out of stubbornness, while he could go for better. And we as people sometimes do that too. I’ve seen it many times in my life, so that was interesting.

On top of that, we also wanted to know more about his character and why he was so full of anger. Delroy Lindo did a terrific job as Paul. There was even a moment where he was walking by himself, talking towards the camera. That’s another filming technique the director used but in the advantage of telling more about him.

War is still alive

The Vietnam war is over, but it can still be felt in both parties. The events that happened are still in the minds of the ones who experienced the consequences.

We do follow some African Americans, but we also see the hatred from some Vietnamese people towards Americans. And, I can’t blame them either. Some lost their parents due to that war, and there were some horrific events.

On the other hand, there were causalities in both parties. Some tend to forget that others understand it. And as long as there is this hatred for each other, the war is still kept alive.

Conclusion

I loved this film for its story, but also its cinematography. If you love cinema, film making, then you might enjoy it as much as I do. I won’t say this film for everyone. However, this is really some creative storytelling with some fine acting.
