Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)

After the success of Raiders of the Lost Ark, a sequel was guaranteed. Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz wrote the screenplay, but it’s George Lucas who wrote the story. You can see some Han Solo in Indiana Jones. After all, Harrison Ford plays both roles.

I consider this film to be darker than the first film. Especially the rituals. With that said, it’s still highly entertaining as Harrison Ford is made for that role. We can see his thrill for an adventure through the movie screen.

Also, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) is actually a prequel. I knew this before I was re-watching the film. On the other hand, I did not realize this when I first saw it years ago. On top of that, I couldn’t find any indication in the film. Although, it’s possible that the dates displayed the years, showing us that it indeed took place before Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The supporting cast

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) has a new support cast, which is different from the first one. Still, I wished John Rhys-Davies was in this movie. In the first film, his character mentioned that he already worked with Indy together in the past.

Instead, we had a new Indiana Girl, who Indy found in a club at the beginning and Indy’s little helper.

I use to love Indy’s little helper when I was a kid, but now I don’t. I wished he was never in it. Furthermore, his sole job was to crawl up in tight quarters and say “Doctor Jones” about a thousand times.

Kate Capshaw is the featured singer and the latest “Indiana girl.” The film fails to carry over a new potential love affair, as it all goes to quickly. But, this was a writing issue. Somewhere it felt like the filmmakers needed to include a love interest.

The Temple of Doom (1984)

Although I might have complaints about the new cast, the film is still good. I don’t hate them either, as I mostly see these films for Harrison Ford.

There were many enjoyable parts in Indian Jones and The Temple of Doom (1984). For instance, we had a wicked dinner with monkey brains. Those really looked disgusting. And, I’m not even talking about the soup.

I loved all the parts when they discovered the cult. The danger, the thrill, the action, everything! Also, how awesome were the mine cart scenes. It’s a real rollercoaster.

There was a lot of darkness in these tribes’ people as they were doing their insane rituals. I remember seeing this as a kid, and I was shocked when he pulled that heart out. Eventually, Indiana Jones became possessed by an evil spirit. For the first time, we got to see an evil Indiana Jones. Thank god that the kid snapped him out of it.

I always thought the bridge scene was spectacular. When Indy cut it down, you know it was going to go down. And, the crocodiles made it even worse. I wouldn’t want to fall in those waters. Otherwise, I would have been eaten alive. The Indiana Jones films can be cruel from time to time.

Conclusion

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) is maybe a darker film, but it’s still highly enjoyable. It’s entertaining start-to-finish and had some great visuals for its time.
