The return of Star Wars

I will never forget how excited I was when the first teaser trailer dropped.

I never would have imagined Star Wars coming back to the big screen before it became Disney’s property.

By now, we already have the new trilogy and some other spin-off movies. It’s not even over yet, as some of it still has to come out. I even made a timeline post. Click here for the guide.

Although I’m glad of the expansion, I try to keep the original three films as a separate experience in my head. I feel like the expansion can ruin the admiration we once had for the original films. For example, the path that Luke Skywalker took in the 8th episode can destroy the image we had of him. Therefore, I try to keep those separate.

ForceAwakensThe Force Awakens

The 7th film was a reward for all Star Wars fans.

It gave us everything we wanted: the lightsaber fights, new planets, new droids, new space ships battles, …

We could tell that Rey was the main character, but Finn had almost an equal amount of screentime. Both characters were interesting to me.

We have never seen a stormtrooper becoming a good guy in a film. So that already was original. Rey, her origin story is a mystery, which is now unfolded by “The Rise of Skywalker.” Back then, it kept us wondering why she had a strong connection with the force.

The most interesting character for me was Kylo Ren. Some didn’t like Adam Driver as the new villain because he seemed afraid and vulnerable. But I considered that to be something positive, it felt different than we had seen before. There was an internal struggle between the light and the darkness in him. I was pleased to see that there was more dept to him than being a lousy villain.

J.J. Abrams giving us Nostalgia

Giving the fans some nostalgic was a smart and safe approach from J.J.

Everyone loved to see Harisson Ford back as Han Solo. The first time watching it gave me goosebumps. The same goes for seeing the Millenium Falcon.

Those moments gave me a smile on my face.

The only downside was the Starkiller base, which was a copy of the Death Star but bigger. This is where the Nostalgia went too far. It also made the threat of the original movies feel like a joke. Instead, I would have preferred to see another approach.

Conclusion

Overall, I enjoyed Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens. It’s the best one in its trilogy.

It has its issues as making some safe approaches as relying on a lot of Nostalgia but still succeeds in being a fantastic movie nonetheless.
