Is it a “Birds of Prey” movie?

Honestly, they should have named this movie “Harley Quinn.”

Yes, there were also Black Canary, Huntress, and Renee Montoya, but the movie wasn’t focussed on them. It was pretty clear that it was all about Harley.

Well, we could say this was a sort of prequel to Birds of Prey. But I rather have movies named their titles correctly without being “misleading.”

With all that being said, I did not mind a Harley Quinn movie.

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn

I can’t imagine someone else taking on this role instead of Margot Robbie.

The story of the film was “meh,” but I love to see Harley Quinn on screen. It’s the only character I care about.

Margot Robbie nails the role, she is insane, funny, and dangerous. Her fighting style is fantastic and entertaining to watch. Even her voice feels right!

There was also more depth for her character as she’s dealing with her break up. But also, while she is trying to stand on her own and trying to be a slightly better person. Well, she is still a psycho, but a psycho with a small heart.

Birds of Prey is told in Harley Quinn’s perspective, as she is the narrator, which worked great in this movie.

Bad-ass fight scenes

The action scenes are the best parts of “Birds of Prey.”

My favorite one is at the police station. It really showed us how Harley Quinn can kick ass in a fun but dangerous way. I know I would run if I had to fight her.

As in Wonder Woman, the filmmakers use a lot of slow-motion while fighting. Usually, I’m not into those kinda scenes, but for some reason, it felt right.

The other characters

I’m going to write my opinion about the three following roles, as I was looking forward to their portrayal.

  • Black Mask: I was excited to see Black Mask on the big screen, but something didn’t feel right. At first, I was wondering if Ewan McGregor was miscast. But no, that wasn’t the issue. It was how he was written. He was just crazy, a total assh*le, and it was too over the top. I’d rather had a villain that was a scary mob boss that made us understood his motives. But no, he was a bad guy for the sake of having one. But I bet Ewan still had fun with it, and he wasn’t a miscast after all for how he was written. And when he had to be threatening, he was scary.
  • Black Canary: I wasn’t sure about this one, but end up liking her. Black Canary is my favorite female superhero of DC Comics. Until this day, none tv show or movie had done her justice. Was this the Black Canary I wanted? Not really, but she was badass, her fighting style was brute force, and I enjoyed it.
  • Huntress: she had the most interesting backstory of the Birds of Prey. But she was used for comedic purposes, which I disliked. Even though I laughed a couple of times, I wished she was a more serious person.

Most of my critique on these are based on my personal preferences. That’s also because I’ve read a lot of DC comics, and I want a good representation of their personality. I know not everyone is going to have the same opinion on this matter and that’s okay to me.

Conclusion

Birds of Prey is a fun Harley Quinn movie. It’s an okay movie to watch once, I wouldn’t want to see it a second time.

Well, I’ll maybe rewatch the police station scene on Youtube when it’s available because those were the best.
