2019 is coming to an end. It is time for my top 5 movies of this year. Next year, I will make a top 10, but this year I’m just starting out with this blog.
There are still plenty of movies to watch for me. I made a commitment to view as many new films as possible to review them. But I started this blog in October, so I’m keeping this year’s list short.
Here are my top 5 movies of 2019
5: John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum
I had a great viewing experience with the third movie by John Wick. With insane action sequences that are choreographed in such a fantastic way that your jaw will drop.
“John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” is a visual masterpiece with a flawless execution when it comes to action movies. Keanu Reeves is a real badass!
4: Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood
I’m a Tarantino fan, and this movie did not disappoint. Maybe, not his best film, but I surely enjoyed it.
I’ve always admired the dialogue-driven approach, while the plot itself is relatively simple. What also really kept me interested were the performances of Brad Pitt and Di Caprio.
3: The Irishman
The runtime may seem long, but none of those minutes feel like a waste of time. The Irishman is everything I love about Martin Scorsese but polished. It is thoughtful, precise, and vulnerable.
We get some great performances by Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci.
2: Avengers: Endgame
I have seen the “Avengers Assemble” a thousand times by now, and it still gives me goosebumps. “Avengers: Endgame” is a special moment in film history. Never have I seen such a massive build-up to be concluded in one epic movie.
The movie experience is one in a lifetime. I hope that someday, I will get a similar feeling with another movie.
1: Joker
Todd Phillips brought us a masterpiece that truly makes an impact. Joaquin Pheonix was stunning, his performance was oscar-worthy. The scenography is all brilliance.
It’s no surprise that this movie is the winner of my top 5 movies of 2019.
The origin story is tragic, scary, and grotesque. But, it was so mesmerizing, it sticks weeks in your had after watching it.
I would not even consider this to be a super-hero (or villain) movie. It’s a proper psychological thriller/drama, with one of the most exceptional character development. From a broken, depressed man to becoming the insane Joker.
The movie is also giving us a message, a reflection for ourselves. The impact our society has on other people, without us realizing it. Todd Philips sure wasn’t shy to hide it away and delivered this powerfully.
