Simple story, great cinematography
For a long time, I have always thought that every movie needed a good story to be good. “Mad Max: Fury Road” has a rather simple story. In summary, it’s an escort/escape movie to reach a better life.
BUT, this movie proved to me that fantastic cinematography can make great movies. The visuals are crazy, mainly because George Miller uses a lot of practical effects. The explosions, the car flips, the insane guy playing the guitar. What a masterpiece.
ALSO, no moments are wasted. Every scene is there for a reason. They all explain more about this apocalyptic world.
The world that Miller created is marvelous. Well, it is a lot of sand, but it matches the atmosphere. So does the crazy men with all-white “paint” on them. The designs of their looks are stunning.
Furiosa, the real badass
Mad Max is not the star of this movie, but Furiosa is. She is so badass in this movie. I love it when there is a female character kicking ass without feeling forced upon us.
Props to Charlize Theron!
Storywise, it is more about Furiosa’s arc. She is fleeing from the leaders to save some girls. Max just got involved, but he decided to help her out.
Tom Hardy, the new Mad Max
From the moment I heard he was cast as Mad Max, I got excited. Even though he does not talk that much, the action in this movie does the job.
Tom Hardy feels different compared to Mel Gibson. The madness in Mel Gibson was in his eyes, Hardy lets his physical appearance do the talking.
Conclusion
Mad Max: Fury Road is packed with enormous practical effects that will blow your mind. The setting is phenomenal, everything matches the environment.
For a movie with a simple plotline, I was surprised how much I admired it. Truly a perfection!
