Director: Martin Scorsese
Writers: Charles Brandt (book), Steven Zaillian
Cast: Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci
Martin Scorsese’s latest mob movie is now out on Netflix.
The gangster movies have not lost his charm after so many years! The Irishman is the story of Frank Sheeran, an Irish hitman and his involvement with the death of Jimmy Hoffa.
The Irishman is based on real events.
One of Robert De Niro best performances
Everybody has seen this man in different movies. He plays in many different genres, but the ones where he shines the most are still mobs movies.
There is something so appealing when watching Robert De Niro performing like a hitman. On one side, he looks like a man who does not show his emotions. The movie also refers to this. On the other hand, he has this look in his eyes where you can tell his true feelings behind some actions.
His facial expressions are so grip taking. It speaks louder than words! De Niro does not need to draw attention by making big gestures or raising his voices. It made me reconsider my favorite performance of the year. At first, I was all for Joaquin Phoenix, but now I do not know who to chose.
Nobody threatens Hoffa!
Jimmy Hoffa was the president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. He disappeared on July 30, 1975. No one has ever found him, and seven years later, he was declared legally dead. His cause of death has remained unsolved.
There is a lot to cover on this character. If you want to know the story about Hoffa and his importance to American History. Check the video down below:

What is not to love when you have Al Pacino and De Niro in one movie?
Al Pacino is portraying “Jimmy Hoffa” in “The Irishman.” This masterpiece is full of great performances of these older actors. He is no exception!
And we all know why we love Al Pacino. We like to see him yell! And he sure does! He is playing this character who is not taking “no” for an answer.
Martin Scorsese, the king of mobsters movie
This man is 77 years old now, and he still delivers!
I’m amazed how someone of his age still gives us masterpieces that are so entertaining. He can get away with a 3 hour and a half movie without me complaining about being it too long. The runtime felt perfect to me.
What I genuinely admire at his work is that “the Irishman” feels like a real film. There is so much build-up: the relationships between different characters, the politics, the reflection to our lives, the value of human life, etc.
Nothing feels rushed. Martin Scorsese knows what is importance: “the art of telling a good story.” It is not only about the events, but the human emotional aspect of it
.
Joe Pesci, the mob boss
Russel Bufalino (Joe Pesci) is a powerful man who does not even seem to know the difference between work and crime. The orders of having someone killed are cold, and all seem justified through his eyes.
Being able to pull off a character like that is outstanding.
And everything is so organized. All future crimes need Bufalino’s approval. Otherwise, there will be consequences. It is crazy to realize that crime organizations can be so well organized.
Frank Sheeran daughters
Frank has four daughters, but Peggy Sheeran (Anna Paquin) has the most screentime. He desperately tries to connect to her but without any success.
The daughters knew of his criminal activities. Her silence towards Frank and Russel was the centerpiece of judgment. She could see through them for what they are. Evil men who do not even seem to know they are.
There was one small flaw in this. I got the feeling that the movie was building up to something with Peggy. (Spoiler alert) In the end, it resulted in her not talking to him and avoiding him at any cost. It felt like something was missing.
But it is what it is.
Conclusion: mob life = no life
One message states the obvious. The life of a gangster is not the life we want to pursuit. It just brings destruction around us.
In the movie, a lot of characters are introduced by their cause of death. These causes are the reflection of the hard reality of this kind of life. A lot of them result in either death or jail time.
The Irishman is a true masterpiece of 2019. If you want to watch a good film with some real human emotion, be sure to watch this film!
